Feature laden

I was on a long flight earlier this week and I had a laptop from work that I thought would entertain me for a while. Not the case. The battery life was abysmal, flickering out after 1.25 hours on a full charge. So I started looking on Amazon just to see prices for portable DVD players. There’s clearly some competition in that space, but a couple of features that some models sport to differentiate themselves seem entirely irrational:

  1. The Remote
    DVD remote
You can’t even see a 7-inch screen at more than arm’s length.
  2. The Swivel
    DVD swivel
I’m not even going to comment on this.

you know, you make fun of the remote but… I have a satellite radio in my car. It’s on my dashboard — actually, it’s on the instrument cluster partially obscuring the speedometer and fuel gauge — so it’s not more than 24 inches from me.

Anyway, I use the damn remote to change stations all the time, not because I can’t reach, but because the buttons are so small that I’d end up pressing the wrong one all the time with my sausage fingers.

and I can see times when a remote for a portable DVD player would be nice if you were whippin’ up a batch to a hot movie.
