Zeitgeist at its most ephemeral

Blogger Play is a slideshow that displays the images that have most recently been uploaded to people’s Blogger accounts. After watching it for only 60 seconds, an image of a church billboard that I recognized as being only a few miles from my home appeared:

Dethroner has an article on how to select an HDTV written in the style of a “choose your own adventure” book. Amusing read.

How to win on ebay

Sniper

From slashdot:
“A study by South Korean physicists confirms what some of us have taken for granted for a long time: a single bid at end of auction nets the most wins. From the article: ‘Plugging all those data into the model and testing the outcome in terms of how the auctions turned out, the team found that the probability of submitting a winning bid on an item indeed drops with each bid. “Our analysis explicitly shows that the winning strategy is to bid at the last moment as the first attempt rather than incremental bidding from the start.” The study appears in the current Physical Review E journal.'”

Feature laden

I was on a long flight earlier this week and I had a laptop from work that I thought would entertain me for a while. Not the case. The battery life was abysmal, flickering out after 1.25 hours on a full charge. So I started looking on Amazon just to see prices for portable DVD players. There’s clearly some competition in that space, but a couple of features that some models sport to differentiate themselves seem entirely irrational:

  1. The Remote
    DVD remote
You can’t even see a 7-inch screen at more than arm’s length.
  2. The Swivel
    DVD swivel
I’m not even going to comment on this.

I win

According to the Motley Fool:

Microsoft is offering MSN Search users $1 million worth of prizes, including gift cards to a formidable list of consumer-centric retailers like Starbucks and Home Depot.

Surfers win if they use certain search keywords that have been preordained by Microsoft during the contest period.

Ummm… so the second that they choose “anal teen crumb-catchers” to be the winning search term, someone needs to tell me where to collect my prizes.
