Spain legalizes gay marriage

From the BBC:

Spain’s lower house of parliament has voted in favour of allowing gay couples to marry and adopt children.

And Canada is right behind.

The Roman Catholic Church wields great influence in Spain, but the BBC’s Katya Adler in Madrid says that since the Madrid bomb attacks in March 2004, Spaniards want unity among their people more than anything.

Granted, that’s one person’s opinion, but it illustrates in sharp relief how differently our countries have reacted to terrorist attacks. Maybe they saw the US as an example of what not to do.

Gauging Spain’s reaction to the terrorist attacks is not very helpful.

Consider that the folks who struck the Madrid train stations were not international terrorists, but rather Basque separatists (Spaniards) who have an agenda that is very much unlike the terrorists that struck the US on 9/11.

Furthermore, the Spanish attack was timed to affect policitical elections. 9/11/01 was not planned to have a direct impact on the election in ’04, otherwise, why wouldn’t they have waited a few years?

If you’re going to compare reactions to terrorism, try comparing Israel and the US who are essentially in the same boat. For a situation comparable to Spain, look to the republic of Georgia.
