Chicago’s Bean sculpture is finally free to photograph

thebeanisfreeatlast
Above is the sculpture in Chicago’s Millennium Park called Cloud Gate (aka The Bean). It was donated by SBC Communications, but its upkeep is funded by taxpayers, and it’s on public land. In a moment of idiocy, the city claimed that the artist retained the copyright on the sculpture, and that people weren’t allowed to photograph it. Later the city decided to charge for the “privilege” of photographing it. After much well-justified public outcry, the city made it free today.
The Chicago Tribune has an article about it.

Your sleeve and you: Frnds 4eva

SMS sleeve
This is a single sleeve that you wear that tells you that someone is text messaging you. It communicates with you by changing the pattern of pleats in the cloth. You then brush them a certain way to reply with, and I quote, “i call you back”. Yes, it’s stupid, but also might be dangerous. It looks remarkably similar to those more protective sleeves that are used to train attack dogs. There’s no mention on whether it comes with a rabies vaccine.

Japanese toilet commercial

Toto Toilet
Everyone knows how obsessive Japan is with toilet technology. I don’t know what any of it means, but it’s kind of funny. They really want you to buy this toilet.

Chitinous backpack

chitinous backpack
It’s a backpack with a segmented hard shell that you wrap around a tree or lamppost, lock it, and then walk away. If necessity is the mother of invention, the impetus for this thing has got to be a good story. Given the current American anxiety regarding unattended baggage, this is sure to do well.
